Volkswagen Passat eHybrid
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your Passat eHybrid+−
The Volkswagen Passat eHybrid has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid.
The Volkswagen Passat eHybrid (B9) is a plug-in hybrid estate, on sale in the UK from 2024. Unlike its B8 predecessor, the B9 arrives as an estate only and brings a substantially larger 25.7kWh gross battery (around 19.7kWh usable) alongside a much more capable onboard AC charger. It charges through a Type 2 inlet, and the cable you need for home wallboxes and public AC points is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The B9 also gains a CCS port for DC rapid charging at up to 50kW, which uses the charger's own tethered cable rather than one you buy. For day-to-day plugging in, the AC charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases, making cable choice a little more involved than on older PHEV Passats.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Passat eHybrid need?
The Passat eHybrid B9's onboard AC charger supports up to 11kW, but only on a three-phase supply. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps charging at 7.4kW no matter what cable or wallbox you use. For the majority of owners, a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 cable delivers the full speed their home can provide, and the 19.7kWh usable battery fills in around two and a half to three hours at that rate.
A 22kW three-phase cable is only worth choosing if you have a three-phase supply at home or you regularly park at 22kW public AC chargers. On those points the Passat will pull its full 11kW. On a standard single-phase home setup the 22kW cable charges at exactly the same 7.4kW as the cheaper option, so it is future-proofing rather than a speed upgrade for most buyers.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the usable 19.7kWh pack from empty costs roughly £1.50 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £5.30 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Because this is a PHEV rather than a full BEV, most owners charge daily from a part-depleted state, so the real cost per session is typically lower. Check current tariffs, as energy prices change.

Volkswagen Passat eHybrid FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid need?+−
The Volkswagen Passat eHybrid has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.
Can the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid charge at 22kW?+−
Yes, the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid B9 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC points. For most UK owners on a single-phase supply, a 7.4kW cable gives the full home charging speed. A 22kW three-phase cable is only useful if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points. A 5m lead suits most driveways.
Can the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid B9 charge at 11kW?+−
Yes, the onboard AC charger supports up to 11kW, but only on a three-phase supply. Most UK homes are single-phase, limiting home charging to 7.4kW regardless of cable rating. On a three-phase wallbox or a 22kW public AC point, the Passat will draw its full 11kW using a three-phase Type 2 cable.
How long does the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid B9 take to charge at home?+−
On a typical 7.4kW home wallbox, the roughly 19.7kWh usable battery charges from empty in around two and a half to three hours. On a three-phase 11kW setup that drops to around two hours. A standard 3-pin socket is considerably slower and is better treated as an emergency backup.
Does the Volkswagen Passat eHybrid B9 support DC rapid charging?+−
Yes. The B9 eHybrid has a CCS port and supports DC charging at up to 50kW. Rapid chargers supply their own tethered cable, so you do not need to buy one. The Type 2 cable you purchase is for slower AC home and public charging only.
