Why this fits your ABT eTransporter 6.1+

The Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7.2kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1.

The Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 is an electric van produced between 2020 and 2021, based on the T6.1 Transporter but converted to battery power by ABT e-Line. It carries a 37.3kWh gross battery and uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging alongside a CCS port for DC rapid charging at up to 50kW. As a depot or business vehicle, it was typically charged overnight on a wallbox between shifts.

For AC charging at a wallbox or public AC point, you bring a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The ABT eTransporter's onboard AC charger accepts up to 7.2kW on a single phase, which means a standard 7.4kW wallbox and cable combination gives you very close to the full AC charging speed the van can use.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ABT eTransporter 6.1 need?

The ABT eTransporter's onboard charger is limited to 7.2kW on a single phase, so a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable delivers the full AC charging rate this van can accept. There is no benefit in choosing a more expensive 22kW three-phase cable: the van's single-phase charger will simply use 7.2kW regardless.

Given the relatively modest 37.3kWh battery, a full charge from empty takes around five hours on a 7.2kW wallbox, making it well suited to overnight depot charging. A 5m cable suits most commercial premises; longer leads of 7m or 10m are useful if the wallbox is positioned away from the parking spot or the van's port is on the far side.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 37.3kWh pack from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs around £3. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh, the same charge runs to roughly £10. For a fleet or depot vehicle charged overnight, an economy tariff makes running costs particularly low. Always check current rates.

Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 need?+

The Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7.2kW.

Can the Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 charge at 22kW?+

No, the Volkswagen ABT eTransporter 6.1 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 7.2kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the VW ABT eTransporter need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home or depot wallboxes and public AC charge points. The onboard charger is limited to 7.2kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW cable is all that is needed. There is no advantage to a 22kW three-phase cable on this van.

Can the ABT eTransporter charge faster than 7.2kW on AC?+

No. The onboard AC charger tops out at 7.2kW on a single-phase supply. A higher-rated cable or a more powerful wallbox will not speed things up on AC. For faster top-ups, the van supports CCS DC rapid charging at up to 50kW using the charger's own tethered cable.

How long does the ABT eTransporter take to charge?+

On a 7.2kW wallbox, a full charge from empty takes around five hours. This makes it a practical overnight charge for depot or fleet use. DC rapid charging at up to 50kW is considerably faster for mid-shift top-ups when needed.

What length cable do I need for the ABT eTransporter?+

A 5m cable works for most commercial or home charging setups. Because vans are longer than typical passenger cars, if your wallbox is at one end of the parking space and the charging port is at the other end of the vehicle, a 7m or 10m cable gives you the reach you need.
