Why this fits your California eHybrid+

The Volkswagen California eHybrid has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volkswagen California eHybrid.

The Volkswagen California eHybrid is a plug-in hybrid campervan based on the T7 Multivan platform, introduced in 2024 as a 4MOTION all-wheel-drive model. It carries a 25.8kWh gross battery (around 19.7kWh usable) and connects to AC charge points through a Type 2 inlet. Unlike earlier California models, it also supports DC rapid charging at up to 50kW via CCS, making it genuinely practical for longer road trips when you need a quicker top-up.

For home wallboxes and public AC points, the cable you provide is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The California eHybrid's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, which sets the ceiling for how fast the battery fills from an AC source regardless of what the wallbox can offer.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the California eHybrid need?

The California eHybrid can draw up to 11kW on a three-phase AC supply. Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, which caps home charging at 7.4kW irrespective of the cable rating. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is therefore the practical and cost-effective answer for home charging, delivering the full speed the grid connection allows.

A 22kW rated cable earns its extra cost in two scenarios: you have a three-phase supply at home, or you regularly use 22kW public AC charge points. At those points the California eHybrid will charge at its full 11kW. Campervan owners may particularly value this, as campsite hook-ups and holiday park chargers sometimes offer three-phase AC. On a single-phase supply, a 22kW cable charges no faster than a 7.4kW one.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 25.8kWh battery from empty on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh costs roughly £2. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh, the same charge comes to around £7. As a campervan often used for weekend trips and holidays, keeping the battery charged at home between adventures is inexpensive. Always check current tariff rates, as they can change.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Volkswagen California eHybrid need?+

The Volkswagen California eHybrid has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Volkswagen California eHybrid charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volkswagen California eHybrid has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the VW California eHybrid need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. The onboard charger supports up to 11kW on three phases. For most UK home setups with a single-phase supply, a 7.4kW cable gives the full available speed. DC rapid charging uses the rapid charger's own tethered cable.

Can the California eHybrid charge at 11kW or 22kW?+

The onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases. On a typical single-phase UK home supply, AC charging is capped at 7.4kW. At a three-phase public AC point or with a three-phase home supply, the California will draw up to 11kW. It cannot exceed 11kW on AC.

How long does the VW California eHybrid take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 25.8kWh battery takes around three and a half hours from empty. On a slower 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW, expect eight to ten hours. DC rapid charging at up to 50kW is available for faster top-ups when travelling.

What length cable do I need for the California eHybrid?+

A 5m cable covers most home driveways. The California is a large campervan, so consider where the charging port sits relative to your wallbox: if there is a long run from the socket to the vehicle, a 7m or 10m cable prevents a tight stretch on the connector.
