Volkswagen Passat GTE
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your Passat GTE+−
The Volkswagen Passat GTE has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.6kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.
Which Volkswagen Passat GTE versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every Volkswagen Passat GTE, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- Volkswagen Passat GTE Dsg
- Volkswagen Passat GTE Advance
- Volkswagen Passat GTE Advance Dsg
Whichever Passat GTE trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Volkswagen Passat GTE.
The Volkswagen Passat GTE (B8) is a plug-in hybrid saloon and estate that was on sale in the UK between 2015 and 2022. It pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor and a relatively modest battery pack: pre-facelift models carry a 9.9kWh pack, while the 2019 facelift brought this up to 13.0kWh. The car charges through a standard Type 2 inlet, and the cable you bring for home or public AC charging is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
There is no DC rapid charging port on the Passat GTE, so all plug-in charging happens through the Type 2 socket. The onboard AC charger is rated at 3.6kW single-phase, which is a gentle charge rate by modern PHEV standards. Because the battery is comparatively small, that rate is perfectly adequate: even the larger 13.0kWh pack fills in well under four hours on a wallbox.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Passat GTE need?
The Passat GTE's onboard charger maxes out at 3.6kW, so a standard 3.6kW or 7.4kW Type 2 cable covers everything the car can draw. A 7.4kW cable rated for a single phase will work perfectly here, and is the most practical choice because it fits any wallbox or public AC point you are likely to use. There is no benefit in choosing a higher-rated cable for this car.
A 22kW three-phase cable would be wasted on the Passat GTE. The onboard charger cannot accept more than 3.6kW regardless of the cable rating, so the extra cost buys nothing. A straightforward 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead in a 5m length is the right choice for the vast majority of owners.
A 5m cable covers most driveways and public bays comfortably. If your wallbox is further from where you normally park, or the socket falls on the far side of the car, a 7m or 10m lead gives you more flexibility.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 13.0kWh facelift battery from empty costs roughly £1 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £3.50 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The 9.9kWh pre-facelift pack is proportionally cheaper still. Because the battery is small, cost per charge is low regardless of the rate you are on. Check current tariffs, as energy prices change.

Volkswagen Passat GTE FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Volkswagen Passat GTE charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Volkswagen Passat GTE has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.6kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Volkswagen Passat GTE need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The GTE has a Type 2 inlet and no DC port, so all charging is AC through that socket. A 7.4kW single-phase cable is the right choice: it works with any home wallbox or public AC point, and the car's 3.6kW onboard charger sets the actual rate regardless.
Can the Volkswagen Passat GTE charge at 7.4kW?+−
No. The Passat GTE's onboard AC charger is rated at 3.6kW, so it draws around 3.6kW regardless of the cable or charger rating. A 7.4kW cable and wallbox are still the sensible combination because they are universally compatible, but the car itself limits the charging rate.
How long does the Volkswagen Passat GTE take to charge at home?+−
On a 3.6kW wallbox or a 7.4kW wallbox (limited to 3.6kW by the car), the facelift 13.0kWh battery takes around three and a half to four hours from empty. The pre-facelift 9.9kWh pack charges in closer to three hours. A 3-pin socket is slower still at roughly the same rate, since the car limits the draw.
Does the Volkswagen Passat GTE have DC rapid charging?+−
No. The Passat GTE (B8, 2015 to 2022) does not have a CCS or CHAdeMO port, so DC rapid charging is not available. All charging goes through the Type 2 AC inlet at up to 3.6kW. If DC capability is important to you, the newer B9 Passat eHybrid supports up to 50kW DC.
