Why this fits your C40 Recharge+

The Volvo C40 Recharge has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Volvo C40 Recharge versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volvo C40 Recharge, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volvo C40 Recharge Core
  • Volvo C40 Recharge Plus
  • Volvo C40 Recharge Ultimate
  • Volvo C40 Recharge Pro Twin AWD
  • Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Core AWD
  • Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Plus AWD

Whichever C40 Recharge trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volvo C40 Recharge.

The Volvo C40 Recharge is an electric SUV coupe sold in the UK from 2021, available in both single and twin-motor configurations. It carries a 78kWh battery and charges through a Type 2 inlet for AC, so the cable you bring to home wallboxes and public AC points is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The C40 Recharge was later renamed the EC40 from 2024, so if you own an earlier car you will find the same charging setup under both names.

For DC rapid charging the C40 Recharge uses a CCS port and accepts up to around 150kW, which is handled by the rapid charger's own tethered cable. For AC, the onboard charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases. Trims available in the UK included Core, Plus, Ultimate, and Twin AWD variants.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the C40 Recharge need?

The C40 Recharge's onboard AC charger supports up to 11kW, but only on a three-phase supply. Most UK homes run on single-phase electricity, which limits home AC charging to 7.4kW regardless of the cable you choose. For those owners, a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 cable delivers the fastest charge their driveway can provide, filling the 78kWh battery in around ten to eleven hours overnight.

A 22kW three-phase cable earns its cost only if you have access to a three-phase supply or regularly park at 22kW public AC chargers, where the C40 will draw its full 11kW. On a single-phase setup the 22kW cable charges at exactly the same rate as a 7.4kW cable, so the extra investment is purely for future-proofing or multi-charger flexibility rather than any immediate speed gain.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 78kWh battery from empty costs roughly £5.85 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £21 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Charging overnight on a dedicated EV tariff is comfortably the most cost-effective way to run a C40 Recharge. Public rapid charging at 45p to 80p per kWh is substantially more expensive and is best reserved for longer journeys. Check current tariffs, as rates change.

Good
questions.

Contact us
Can the Volvo C40 Recharge charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Volvo C40 Recharge has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volvo C40 Recharge need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. For most UK owners on a single-phase supply, a 7.4kW cable provides the full home charging rate. A 22kW three-phase cable is only beneficial if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC chargers. A 5m lead suits the majority of driveways.

Can the Volvo C40 Recharge charge at 11kW?+

Yes, but only on a three-phase supply. The onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases. Most UK homes are single-phase, limiting home charging to 7.4kW. On a three-phase wallbox or a 22kW public AC point with a suitable cable, the C40 draws its full 11kW.

How long does the Volvo C40 Recharge take to charge at home?+

On a typical 7.4kW home wallbox, the 78kWh battery takes around ten to eleven hours from empty to full, which fits a standard overnight charge. On a three-phase 11kW supply that shortens to roughly seven hours. A 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW would take over 30 hours and is not practical for regular charging.

Is the Volvo C40 Recharge the same as the EC40?+

Yes. Volvo renamed the C40 Recharge to EC40 in 2024, but the charging hardware is essentially the same: Type 2 AC inlet at up to 11kW and CCS DC rapid charging at up to 150kW. The cable you buy works with both generations.
