Charge speeds

Across the Volvo range.

Every Volvo here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.7kW to 22kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Volvo.

Volvo's electric and plug-in hybrid range covers everything from the compact EX30 and C40 Recharge to the flagship EX90 seven-seater, the ES90 saloon, and a long line of Recharge PHEVs including the XC60, XC90, S60, V60, V90, and S90. Every one of them uses a Type 2 inlet, so the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable works across the entire Volvo range for home and public AC charging.

What changes between models is how fast each one charges on AC: most Volvo BEVs charge at 11kW on three phases, while the EX60 steps up to 22kW, and the Recharge PHEVs are limited to around 3.7kW. That AC charging speed is what decides whether a bigger cable is worth buying for your model. Pick your model below for exact charging times and its recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Volvo need?

Every Volvo charges through a Type 2 inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m lead suits most driveways and home wallboxes. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, have a long run to the wallbox, or share a charger with another vehicle. No Volvo needs a Type 1 cable.

The EX30, EX40, EC40, C40 Recharge, EX90, ES90, and XC40 Recharge all have 11kW three-phase onboard chargers. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable rating, so for most Volvo owners a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed the home supply can provide. A 22kW rated cable only makes sense if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points. The EX60 is the exception: it supports 22kW AC on three phases, so on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public charger it will benefit from a 22kW cable.

Volvo Recharge PHEVs such as the XC60, XC90, S60, V60, V90, and S90 charge at around 3.7kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than they can draw. Their smaller batteries also charge fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if needed. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits most of the Volvo range; only EX60 owners who use three-phase supplies regularly need to consider a 22kW cable.

Do all Volvos use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Volvo EV and Recharge plug-in hybrid, from the EX30 and EX40 to the XC90 Recharge PHEV, uses a Type 2 inlet. That means they all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. No Volvo needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Volvo EX30 or EX90 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full home speed available. A 22kW cable only helps on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC charger.

Can a Volvo charge at 22kW AC?+

Most Volvos top out at 11kW on three phases. The EX60 is the exception, supporting 22kW AC on three phases. On a normal single-phase home supply every Volvo charges at 7.4kW or less, so a 22kW cable only adds value for EX60 owners with three-phase access.

What cable does a Volvo XC60 or XC90 Recharge PHEV need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Volvo Recharge PHEVs charge at around 3.7kW on AC, so a 7.4kW cable is more than enough and there is no benefit in buying a larger one. Their compact batteries also suit a 3-pin granny charger for an overnight top-up at home.

What length cable do I need for my Volvo?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, have an awkward driveway, or your wallbox is mounted far from where the car sits. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
