Volvo EC40
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your EC40+−
The Volvo EC40 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which Volvo EC40 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every Volvo EC40, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- Volvo EC40 Plus
- Volvo EC40 Ultra
- Volvo EC40 Plus Pro
- Volvo EC40 Plus Black Edition
- Volvo EC40 Ultra Black Edition
- Volvo EC40 Plus Pro Black Edition
Whichever EC40 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Volvo EC40.
The Volvo EC40 is an electric SUV coupe launched from 2024, carrying forward the platform of the earlier C40 Recharge but with a slightly larger 79kWh battery and a refreshed trim lineup. Available in the UK in Plus, Ultra, and various Black Edition configurations, it connects to the outside world through a Type 2 inlet for AC charging. The cable you bring for home wallboxes and public AC points is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
For longer journeys, the EC40 supports DC rapid charging at up to around 150kW via a CCS port, with the rapid charger providing its own tethered cable. For daily AC charging, the onboard charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases, which is an important detail for owners deciding between a 7.4kW and a 22kW cable.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the EC40 need?
The EC40's onboard AC charger accepts up to 11kW, and like all three-phase AC chargers in the UK, it needs a three-phase electricity supply to reach that ceiling. Standard UK homes are single-phase, capping home charging at 7.4kW. At that rate, the 79kWh battery charges from empty overnight in around eleven hours, which is entirely practical. A 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 cable handles this efficiently.
Owners with access to a three-phase supply, or who regularly visit 22kW public AC chargers, can benefit from a 22kW cable: the EC40 will draw its full 11kW in those situations, cutting a full charge to around seven hours. For the majority without three-phase access, though, the 22kW cable makes no difference to charging speed at home and is only worth the extra cost if your charging habits regularly take you to three-phase public AC points.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 79kWh battery from empty costs roughly £5.90 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £21.30 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Most owners will never need to charge from empty to full in a single session, so the typical overnight top-up is less. An overnight EV tariff makes the most of the EC40's large battery. Public DC rapid charging costs considerably more per kWh, so it is best reserved for en-route top-ups. Check current tariffs.

Volvo EC40 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Volvo EC40 charge at 22kW?+−
Yes, the Volvo EC40 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Volvo EC40 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for AC home and public charging. A 7.4kW single-phase cable suits most UK owners, since home charging is capped at 7.4kW on a single-phase supply regardless of cable rating. A 22kW three-phase cable is worth considering if you have a three-phase supply or frequently use 22kW public AC chargers.
Can the Volvo EC40 charge at 11kW at home?+−
Only if you have a three-phase electricity supply, which is uncommon in UK homes. On a standard single-phase supply, the EC40 charges at 7.4kW regardless of cable or wallbox rating. On a three-phase wallbox or a 22kW public AC point with a suitable cable, it draws its full 11kW.
How long does the Volvo EC40 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW single-phase wallbox, the 79kWh battery takes around eleven hours from empty, comfortably fitting an overnight charge. On a three-phase 11kW supply the time drops to around seven hours. A 3-pin socket is impractical for regular use at over 30 hours and should be kept only as a fallback.
What is the difference between the Volvo EC40 and the C40 Recharge?+−
The EC40 is the renamed successor to the C40 Recharge, introduced in 2024. The battery grew marginally from 78kWh to 79kWh, and the trim names changed, but the charging setup is essentially identical: Type 2 AC inlet at up to 11kW and CCS DC rapid charging at up to around 150kW. The same Type 2 cable works for both.
