Volvo ES90
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your ES90+−
The Volvo ES90 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which Volvo ES90 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every Volvo ES90, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- Volvo ES90 Plus
- Volvo ES90 Ultra
Whichever ES90 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Volvo ES90.
The Volvo ES90 is a fully electric executive saloon from Volvo's first generation of dedicated BEV saloons, with UK deliveries expected from 2026. It comes with a large battery: the base variant carries around 92kWh, with the Twin Motor version using a 106kWh gross pack. Both charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC, so the cable you need for home wallboxes and public AC points is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The ES90 operates on an 800-volt architecture, enabling very high DC rapid charging speeds at up to 350kW via a CCS port. That DC charging uses the rapid charger's own tethered cable. For day-to-day AC charging, the onboard charger accepts up to 11kW on three phases. With a battery this large, getting the cable and charging setup right matters for overnight convenience.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the ES90 need?
The ES90's onboard AC charger tops out at 11kW, and like all three-phase chargers, that rate requires a three-phase electricity supply. UK homes almost universally run on single-phase, meaning home charging is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable. On that basis, a 7.4kW single-phase Type 2 cable is the right choice for most owners, though it does mean a full charge from empty takes around twelve to fourteen hours depending on battery size, making overnight charging from a part-depleted state the normal routine.
If you have access to a three-phase wallbox or regularly use 22kW public AC chargers, a 22kW three-phase cable enables the ES90 to draw its full 11kW. That cuts the time to fill the 106kWh pack from around fourteen hours on single-phase to around ten hours, which may be meaningful if you travel long distances regularly. For most owners on a standard home supply, though, the 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed the supply can provide.
What does it cost to charge?
Filling the 106kWh Twin Motor battery from empty costs roughly £7.95 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £28.60 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The 92kWh base variant is proportionally cheaper at around £6.90 off-peak or roughly £24.80 on a standard rate. With a battery of this size, an overnight EV tariff makes a very noticeable difference to running costs. Public rapid charging at 45p to 80p per kWh is far more expensive, so home charging should do most of the work. Check current tariffs.

Volvo ES90 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Volvo ES90 charge at 22kW?+−
Yes, the Volvo ES90 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Volvo ES90 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for AC home and public charging. Most UK owners on a single-phase supply will find a 7.4kW cable gives them the full home charging speed. A 22kW three-phase cable allows the ES90 to draw its full 11kW, but only on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC point.
Can the Volvo ES90 charge at 11kW at home?+−
Only with a three-phase electricity supply, which is uncommon in UK homes. On a standard single-phase home supply, the ES90 charges at 7.4kW regardless of cable rating. On a three-phase wallbox or compatible public AC point with a 22kW cable, it draws its full 11kW AC rate.
How long does the Volvo ES90 take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW single-phase wallbox, the 106kWh Twin Motor battery takes around fourteen to fifteen hours from empty. The 92kWh base pack takes around twelve to thirteen hours. In practice, overnight charging from a part-depleted state easily keeps pace with daily driving. On a three-phase 11kW supply, fill times drop to around ten and nine hours respectively.
What is the Volvo ES90's maximum DC rapid charging speed?+−
The ES90 supports up to 350kW DC rapid charging, enabled by its 800-volt architecture. At that rate, adding significant range takes only a few minutes. DC rapid chargers supply their own tethered cable, so you do not need to purchase one. The Type 2 cable you buy is for slower AC charging only.
