Why this fits your EX90+

The Volvo EX90 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Volvo EX90 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volvo EX90, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volvo EX90 Core
  • Volvo EX90 Plus
  • Volvo EX90 Ultra
  • Volvo EX90 Single Motor

Whichever EX90 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volvo EX90.

The Volvo EX90 is Volvo's flagship seven-seat fully electric SUV, introduced in 2024 and built on the SPA2 platform. It carries a 111kWh gross battery pack, with around 107kWh usable, and is offered across Core, Plus, and Ultra trim levels as well as a Single Motor variant. AC charging goes through a Type 2 inlet, and DC rapid charging uses a CCS port, with both sharing the same combined socket.

The cable you bring for home and public AC charging is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The EX90's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases, which places it above the 7.4kW ceiling of a standard UK single-phase supply. DC rapid charging at up to 250kW is handled entirely by the charge station's own tethered cable and does not require any cable purchase on your part.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the EX90 need?

For the vast majority of EX90 owners a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right home charging cable. The car is rated for 11kW AC on three phases, but UK domestic wiring is almost always single-phase, which means the charging speed is limited to 7.4kW at home no matter what cable rating you choose. At that rate the 111kWh pack takes around fifteen hours from empty, so plugging in overnight each evening and topping up incrementally is the practical approach.

A three-phase 22kW cable becomes useful only if you have a three-phase electrical supply at home (which is uncommon in UK homes) or if you regularly charge at 22kW AC public charge points, where the EX90 will draw its full 11kW. On a single-phase setup the result is identical to using a 7.4kW cable, so there is no charging speed advantage from the pricier option unless your supply can actually support it.

A 5m lead covers most driveways. Given the EX90's overall length as a seven-seat SUV, it is worth measuring the distance from your wallbox to where the charging port sits when the car is parked, and choosing a 7m or 10m cable if there is any doubt about reach.

What does it cost to charge?

A full charge of the 111kWh battery from empty costs around £8 on an off-peak EV tariff of roughly 7.5p per kWh, or around £30 at a standard rate of roughly 27p per kWh. Because the EX90 carries a large pack, maximising the savings from an overnight off-peak tariff makes a real difference over the life of the car. Public rapid charging is substantially more expensive per kWh and is best used on longer journeys rather than for routine top-ups. Tariff rates vary, so check current figures when budgeting.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volvo EX90 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. A 5m length is adequate for most driveways. On a single-phase home supply a 7.4kW cable gives you the full speed available; a three-phase 22kW cable only adds benefit if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC chargers.

Can the Volvo EX90 charge at 22kW?+

No. The EX90's onboard AC charger tops out at 11kW on three phases. A 22kW cable cannot push charging above that rate, and on a typical single-phase UK home supply the speed is further limited to 7.4kW. To reach 11kW you need either a three-phase home supply or a three-phase public AC point.

How long does the Volvo EX90 take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW single-phase home wallbox, the 111kWh battery takes around fifteen hours from empty to full. On a three-phase 11kW supply that comes down to roughly ten hours. Because the EX90 has a large pack, most owners top up by plugging in each evening rather than charging from empty, which keeps the car ready without needing a full overnight session.

What length charging cable do I need for the Volvo EX90?+

A 5m cable suits most domestic setups. The EX90 is a long seven-seat SUV, so it is worth measuring the distance from your wallbox to the charging port with the car in its usual parking position. If your wallbox is set back from the car or the port ends up on the far side, a 7m or 10m lead prevents unnecessary cable tension.
