Volvo S90 T8
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your S90 T8+−
The Volvo S90 T8 has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.
Which Volvo S90 T8 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every Volvo S90 T8, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine R Design Pro AWD
- Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine R Design Plus AWD
- Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Pro AWD
- Volvo S90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus AWD
Whichever S90 T8 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the Volvo S90 T8.
The Volvo S90 T8 is a large plug-in hybrid saloon built on the SPA platform, on sale from 2016 and badged Recharge from 2020. Early models carry an 11.6kWh gross battery; from the 2022 model year the pack grew to around 18.8kWh alongside an increase in AC charging to 6.4kW on certain variants. All versions use a Type 2 inlet for AC plug-in charging and have no DC rapid charging capability. UK trim levels have included Twin Engine R Design and Inscription grades in both Plus and Pro specifications.
To charge the S90 T8 at home or at a public AC point, you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The onboard charger is a single-phase unit: 3.7kW on earlier cars and up to 6.4kW on later 2022 model year and newer variants. Neither rate benefits from a three-phase cable, and there is no DC inlet to rapid-charge these cars at all.
Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the S90 T8 need?
A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable works well for the S90 T8, even though the car's onboard charger draws less than that ceiling. On earlier models limited to 3.7kW, and on later cars reaching up to 6.4kW, the cable is not the limiting factor; the car's own charger controls the rate. A 7.4kW cable gives you a compatible lead for any public Type 2 point or home wallbox, with headroom beyond what the car will actually draw.
There is no reason to consider a 22kW three-phase cable for the S90 T8: the onboard charger is single-phase and cannot use three-phase power, so a three-phase cable charges at exactly the same rate as a single-phase one. The practical advice is straightforward: buy a good quality 7.4kW Type 2 lead in a length that reaches your parking spot without being under tension.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 18.8kWh battery from empty costs around £1.50 at an off-peak rate of roughly 7.5p per kWh, or around £5 at a standard rate of roughly 27p per kWh. Earlier cars with the 11.6kWh pack cost less again. The S90 T8's battery is small relative to a full EV, so even at standard electricity rates the per-charge cost is low. The bigger saving comes from using the electric range for shorter trips and reserving the petrol engine for longer journeys. Check current tariff rates when planning your charging costs.

Volvo S90 T8 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the Volvo S90 T8 charge at 22kW?+−
No, the Volvo S90 T8 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What charging cable does the Volvo S90 T8 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The S90 T8's onboard charger is single-phase, rated at 3.7kW on most cars and up to 6.4kW on later 2022-on variants. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is the right choice and will work at any public AC point or home wallbox. There is no DC rapid charging on these cars.
Can the Volvo S90 T8 charge at a rapid charger?+−
No. The S90 T8 is a plug-in hybrid with AC-only charging. There is no CCS or CHAdeMO rapid charging port. The car charges through a Type 2 inlet at up to 3.7kW on earlier models, or up to 6.4kW on later 2022 model year and newer cars.
How long does the Volvo S90 T8 take to charge at home?+−
On a home wallbox at the car's maximum rate, earlier cars with the 11.6kWh battery take around three to four hours from empty. Later models with the 18.8kWh pack take roughly three hours at 6.4kW or closer to five hours at 3.7kW. All of these are short enough to charge fully during an evening at home.
What length charging cable do I need for the Volvo S90 T8?+−
A 5m cable is sufficient for most setups. The S90 is a full-size saloon, so it pays to check that the cable can reach your wallbox from the car's charging port with a little slack to spare. If your socket is at the far end of the parking space, a 7m cable is a sensible choice.
