Why this fits your V90 T8+

The Volvo V90 T8 has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

Which Volvo V90 T8 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Volvo V90 T8, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Volvo V90 T8 Ultra AWD
  • Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine R Design Pro AWD
  • Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine R Design Plus AWD
  • Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Pro AWD
  • Volvo V90 T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus AWD

Whichever V90 T8 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Volvo V90 T8.

The Volvo V90 T8 is a large plug-in hybrid estate on the SPA platform, introduced in 2016 and carrying the Recharge badge from 2020. Earlier models use an 11.6kWh gross battery; from the 2022 model year the pack grows to around 18.8kWh and AC charging rises to up to 6.4kW on those later variants. Trim levels have included Twin Engine R Design and Inscription in both Plus and Pro specifications, as well as the Ultra AWD grade. All versions use a Type 2 inlet for plug-in charging and do not support DC rapid charging.

The cable you need to charge the V90 T8 at home or at a public AC point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. Because the onboard charger is single-phase, there is no advantage to a three-phase cable; the car simply draws its rated current regardless of how capable the cable is. DC rapid charging is not an option on the V90 T8.

Estimates based on battery size and charge power. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the V90 T8 need?

A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right cable for the V90 T8, even though the car draws less than 7.4kW. On earlier cars the onboard charger is limited to 3.7kW; on 2022 model year and later cars it rises to up to 6.4kW. In both cases the cable sits above the car's maximum draw, which means it is compatible with any home wallbox or public AC charge post without restriction.

Because the V90 T8 is single-phase, a three-phase cable is not necessary and adds no benefit. It is more useful to focus on cable length: the V90 is one of the longest estate cars on the market, so leaving enough slack that the cable does not pull against its connectors during a multi-hour overnight charge is the practical priority. A 5m cable covers most setups, and a 7m lead is a sensible step up if the parking arrangement is less convenient.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 18.8kWh battery from empty costs around £1.50 at an off-peak rate of roughly 7.5p per kWh, and roughly £5 at a standard rate of roughly 27p per kWh. Earlier cars with the 11.6kWh pack work out a little cheaper. As a long-wheelbase estate likely to be used for mixed journey types, charging fully each evening and using electric for shorter runs keeps fuel costs low. Public charging is rarely necessary given the short charge times at home. Always check current tariff rates.

Good
questions.

Contact us
Can the Volvo V90 T8 charge at 22kW?+

No, the Volvo V90 T8 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.7kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Volvo V90 T8 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The V90 T8's onboard charger is single-phase: 3.7kW on earlier cars and up to 6.4kW on 2022 model year and later versions. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable is appropriate for all variants. There is no DC rapid charging inlet on these cars.

Can the Volvo V90 T8 use a rapid charger?+

No. The V90 T8 is an AC-only plug-in hybrid. There is no CCS or CHAdeMO port, so DC rapid chargers cannot be used. Charging happens exclusively through the Type 2 inlet at the car's onboard charger rate, which is 3.7kW on most models and up to 6.4kW on later cars.

How long does the Volvo V90 T8 take to charge at home?+

Earlier models with the 11.6kWh battery take around three to four hours from empty at 3.7kW. Later models with the 18.8kWh pack take roughly three hours at 6.4kW or up to five hours at 3.7kW. All versions are quick enough to charge fully during an evening plugged into a home wallbox.

What length charging cable do I need for the Volvo V90 T8?+

A 5m cable is adequate for most driveways. The V90 estate is a long car, so check the distance from your wallbox to the charging port with the car parked as usual. If there is any doubt about reach, a 7m cable is preferable to leaving a 5m lead under tension for hours at a time.
