BMW i7
Charging cable
The i7 is 11kW three-phase as standard. The optional 22kW charger charges faster on a three-phase supply. The 22kW cable is the right one either way.
Charges about 195% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your i7+−
The BMW i7 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 22kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 22kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which BMW i7 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every BMW i7, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- BMW i7 50 xDrive
- BMW i7 M70 xDrive
- BMW i7 eDrive50 M Sport
- BMW i7 xDrive60 M Sport
- BMW i7 50 xDrive M Sport
- BMW i7 60 xDrive M Sport
Whichever i7 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BMW i7.
The BMW i7 is BMW's flagship full-size electric saloon, launching in the UK in 2022 as the G70 generation. The range spans several variants including the 50 xDrive, M70 xDrive, and various M Sport derivatives, all built around a large 105.7kWh gross battery. Like all current BMW EVs, the i7 uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for rapid DC. The cable you bring to a wallbox or public AC charge point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The standard i7 comes with an 11kW three-phase onboard AC charger, though BMW has offered a 22kW optional upgrade on some configurations. DC rapid charging reaches up to 195kW and is handled by the station's own tethered CCS cable, so that is not something you need to purchase separately.
The i7's 105.7kWh battery is one of the largest in any current BMW. Factor in a longer fill time at home compared with smaller-battery EVs. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the i7 need?
If the i7 has the standard 11kW AC charger, the choice of cable follows familiar logic: most UK homes have a single-phase supply capped at 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW Type 2 lead delivers everything the connection can offer. That is the sensible starting point for home charging. Where the optional 22kW upgrade has been specified, a three-phase cable becomes relevant but only alongside a three-phase supply.
A 22kW-rated cable unlocks the i7's full onboard rate on a three-phase supply, whether that is a commercial charge point or a property with a three-phase incoming supply. In that scenario the car will charge at 11kW on a standard 11kW charger, or up to 22kW if the optional charger was fitted. On a single-phase home wallbox the cable rating is irrelevant: the car charges at 7.4kW either way. If you are not sure which AC charger your i7 has, check the vehicle options list before buying a cable.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 105.7kWh battery from empty costs roughly £8 on a dedicated off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £29 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. Given the battery size, a good overnight EV tariff makes a meaningful difference to running costs compared with charging at standard rates. Public rapid chargers at typical 45p to 80p per kWh are expensive for a battery this large and are best kept for long-distance fill-ups. Always check current tariff rates.

BMW i7 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BMW i7 need?+−
The BMW i7 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 22kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
What cable does the BMW i7 need for home charging?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The i7's AC inlet is Type 2, matching UK wallboxes and public AC charge points. For most owners on a single-phase home supply, a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available. If your i7 was ordered with the optional 22kW AC charger and you have a three-phase supply, a three-phase cable will let you use the higher rate.
Can the BMW i7 charge at 22kW?+−
It depends on specification. The standard i7 has an 11kW onboard AC charger, capping AC charging at 11kW on three phases or 7.4kW on a single-phase supply. Some i7 configurations were offered with an optional 22kW charger; in those cases the car can accept 22kW, but only on a three-phase supply. Check your vehicle's option list to confirm which charger was fitted.
How long does a BMW i7 take to charge overnight?+−
The 105.7kWh battery is large, so home charging takes longer than with smaller EVs. On a 7.4kW wallbox expect around 14 to 15 hours from empty to full, which requires planning rather than a casual overnight plug-in from near-empty. On a three-phase 11kW charger that drops to around 9 to 10 hours. An off-peak start in the evening easily covers the battery by morning if you are not starting from completely flat.
What length cable suits a BMW i7?+−
A 5m cable handles most driveways without issue. The i7 is a long car, so the distance from wallbox to charging port can be greater than with a smaller vehicle depending on how you park. If your wallbox is at the opposite end of the car from where the port sits, or set back from the kerb, a 7m or 10m lead gives comfortable slack without stretching the cable taut.
