Why this fits your iX+

The BMW iX has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which BMW iX versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every BMW iX, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • BMW iX M60
  • BMW iX M70 xDrive
  • BMW iX xDrive40 Sport
  • BMW iX xDrive45 Sport
  • BMW iX xDrive50 Sport
  • BMW iX xDrive40 M Sport

Whichever iX trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the BMW iX.

The BMW iX is BMW's flagship electric SUV, arriving in the UK in 2021 as the I20 generation. The UK range includes the xDrive40, xDrive50, M60, and related Sport and M Sport derivatives, with battery sizes differing between the xDrive40 (smaller pack) and the xDrive50 and M60 (111.5kWh gross). All variants use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for rapid DC. The cable you provide at home or at a public AC charge point is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

The iX's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases as standard, with a 22kW option available in some markets. DC rapid charging speeds vary by variant: the xDrive50 and M60 reach around 195kW, while the xDrive40 charges at up to around 150kW. Rapid DC uses the station's tethered cable and does not require a cable you carry.

The xDrive50 and M60 share the 111.5kWh gross battery and reach up to around 195kW on DC. The xDrive40 carries a smaller pack and lower DC rate. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the iX need?

The iX is rated at 11kW on AC, drawing three phases to reach that speed. For the majority of UK owners charging at home, the supply is single-phase, putting a 7.4kW ceiling on home AC charging regardless of the cable. A 7.4kW Type 2 lead covers that ceiling fully and is the right starting point for most iX owners setting up a home charging routine.

A three-phase cable offers a genuine advantage only if your property has a three-phase supply or you regularly stop at 22kW public AC chargers. At a three-phase charge point, the iX draws its full 11kW. On a single-phase supply, a 22kW cable delivers exactly the same 7.4kW as a standard cable. If the optional 22kW onboard charger was fitted to your car, the same principle applies: three-phase supply needed before you see any benefit.

What does it cost to charge?

Topping up the 111.5kWh battery on an xDrive50 from empty costs roughly £8 to £9 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £30 at a standard domestic rate of around 27p per kWh. The iX's large battery makes overnight EV tariffs particularly worthwhile. Public rapid charging, often 45p to 80p per kWh, adds up quickly on a battery this size, so it is best reserved for long journeys. Check current rates before budgeting.

Contact us
What charging cable does the BMW iX need?+

The BMW iX has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the BMW iX charge at 22kW?+

As standard the BMW iX has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger; the optional 22kW charger lets it charge at up to 22kW on a three-phase supply. Either way it uses the same 22kW three-phase cable.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the BMW iX need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points. All iX variants use a Type 2 AC inlet. On a standard single-phase home supply, a 7.4kW cable gives the full available rate. A three-phase cable adds value only if you have three-phase power at home or regularly use 22kW public AC chargers.

Can the BMW iX charge at 22kW on AC?+

The standard iX is fitted with an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, limiting AC charging to 11kW even with a 22kW cable. On a single-phase home supply the rate drops further to 7.4kW. If the optional 22kW charger was specified, the car can accept 22kW on a three-phase supply. Check the vehicle specification to confirm which AC charger is fitted.

How long does a BMW iX take to charge at home?+

With the 111.5kWh gross battery, a full charge from empty on a 7.4kW wallbox takes around 14 to 15 hours. On a three-phase 11kW charger that comes down to around 10 hours. Planning an overnight charge from a reasonably charged starting point is more practical than running to empty regularly given the battery size.

What length cable is best for a BMW iX?+

A 5m cable works for most driveways where the wallbox is close to the parking spot. The iX is a large SUV, so the distance between the wallbox and the charging port can stretch depending on how you park. If there is any doubt, a 7m or 10m cable gives comfortable reach without straining the connection.
