BYD Dolphin
Charging cable
Charges about 50% faster on 22 kW public posts than a 7.4 kW cable.
Why this fits your Dolphin+−
The BYD Dolphin has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.
Which BYD Dolphin versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every BYD Dolphin, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- BYD Dolphin Boost
- BYD Dolphin Active
- BYD Dolphin Design
- BYD Dolphin Comfort
Whichever Dolphin trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BYD Dolphin.
The BYD Dolphin is a compact five-door hatchback on sale in the UK since 2023, using BYD's Blade LFP battery technology. Two battery sizes are available: the Active and Boost trims use a smaller 44.9kWh pack capable of around 65kW DC, while the Comfort and Design trims carry a larger 60.4kWh pack and can accept up to 88kW on DC. All versions share the same Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for DC rapid sessions.
When you plug in at home or at a public AC charger, you use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. That cable is all you need for everyday charging. Rapid DC charging, which uses the station's own tethered lead, is separate and does not require a cable you buy. The Dolphin's onboard AC charger is rated at 11kW on three phases.
Select your battery above. The smaller 44.9kWh Active and Boost packs charge faster on every method; the 60.4kWh Comfort and Design packs trade time for greater range. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Dolphin need?
The Dolphin's 11kW three-phase onboard charger is quicker than a single-phase home connection can feed it. The vast majority of UK homes have a single-phase supply, which limits AC charging to 7.4kW regardless of the cable's rating. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is therefore the practical choice for most owners: it costs less and delivers exactly the same speed at a standard home wallbox as a pricier 22kW cable would.
The case for a 22kW three-phase cable is straightforward: if your home has a three-phase supply or you regularly stop at 22kW public AC chargers, the Dolphin can use its full 11kW at those points, and the cable pays for itself in faster mid-trip top-ups. If neither of those applies, the 22kW cable adds no charging speed at home and simply costs more. A 5m lead works for most parking situations; if you know your wallbox is a long way from where you usually park, a 7m option is worth considering.
What does it cost to charge?
A full charge of the 60.4kWh battery from empty costs roughly £4 to £5 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £16 at a standard domestic rate of roughly 27p per kWh. The 44.9kWh pack works out at roughly £3 and £12 on the same tariffs. Time-of-use tariffs with overnight off-peak windows make an obvious difference to the monthly running cost. Public rapid chargers typically charge at 45p to 80p per kWh, which is considerably more expensive, so they are best kept for longer trips. Tariffs change, so check current rates.

BYD Dolphin FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usCan the BYD Dolphin charge at 22kW?+−
Yes, the BYD Dolphin has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 11kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
Does the BYD Dolphin support V2L?+−
Yes. The BYD Dolphin supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), so a V2L discharge cable lets you run tools, appliances and devices straight from the battery through the Type 2 inlet, at up to 3.6kW.
What charging cable does the BYD Dolphin need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, which covers both home wallboxes and public AC chargers. A 5m lead suits most driveways. On a standard single-phase UK home supply the 7.4kW cable delivers the full available speed. A 22kW three-phase cable only adds benefit if you have a three-phase home supply or make regular use of 22kW public AC chargers.
Does the BYD Dolphin have a Type 1 or Type 2 charging port?+−
Type 2, which is the standard for UK and European EVs. You need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. Rapid DC charging uses a CCS port, and those chargers have their own tethered cables, so you do not need to buy a separate DC lead.
How long does a BYD Dolphin take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 60.4kWh Comfort and Design battery takes around eight to nine hours from empty, which fits within an overnight charge. The smaller 44.9kWh Active and Boost battery takes roughly six to seven hours. A three-pin household socket is significantly slower, around 20 to 22 hours for the larger pack, and is best kept as an emergency option.
Can the BYD Dolphin charge at 11kW at home?+−
Only if your home has a three-phase electrical supply, which most UK properties do not. Standard UK homes are single-phase, which caps AC charging at 7.4kW whatever onboard charger or cable is used. The Dolphin can reach 11kW at a three-phase public AC charger or on a three-phase home supply.
