Charge speeds
Across the BYD range.
Every BYD here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.3kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.
Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide
Charging
your BYD.
BYD's UK lineup covers a wide spread of full electrics and plug-in hybrids. The pure electric range includes the Atto 2, Atto 3, Atto 3 EVO, Dolphin, Dolphin Surf, Han, Seal, Seal U, Sealion 7 and Tang, while plug-in hybrid models include the Dolphin G, Seal 6 Saloon, Seal 6 Touring and Sealion 5. Every BYD sold in the UK uses a Type 2 inlet, so all models take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.
Charging speed on AC varies significantly across the range. Most of BYD's full-electric models have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, while the plug-in hybrids and a handful of BEVs such as the Tang top out at 7kW or less on AC. That difference is what determines whether a larger cable is worth buying. Pick your model below for exact figures and a cable recommendation, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.
What charging cable does a BYD need?
Every BYD charges through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m cable suits most home driveways and wallboxes; choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street or your socket sits some distance from the charging port.
Full-electric BYD models including the Atto 2, Atto 3 EVO, Dolphin, Dolphin Surf, Han, Seal, Seal U and Sealion 7 all have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes run on a single phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW no matter what cable you use, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed your home supply can deliver. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where these models will accept up to 11kW.
BYD plug-in hybrids, including the Dolphin G, Seal 6 Saloon, Seal 6 Touring and Sealion 5, charge at 3.3kW to 6.6kW on AC, and the Tang BEV tops out at 7kW. For all of these a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw, and their smaller batteries are well suited to overnight charging. A single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the full BYD range.
Do all BYDs use a Type 2 charging cable?+−
Yes. Every BYD model sold in the UK, from the Dolphin and Sealion 5 to the Seal and Han, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no BYD requires a Type 1 cable.
What charging cable does a BYD Seal or Atto 3 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase UK home supply they charge at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable covers the full home speed. A 22kW cable is only worth buying if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points regularly.
Can a BYD charge at 22kW on AC?+−
No BYD currently sold in the UK charges at 22kW on AC. The three-phase models top out at 11kW, and only reach that on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase UK home supply every BYD charges at 7.4kW or below.
What cable does a BYD plug-in hybrid like the Sealion 5 or Seal 6 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Sealion 5 charges at 3.3kW on AC, and the Seal 6 variants manage 6.6kW. A standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough for all BYD plug-in hybrids, and their batteries are small enough to top up fully overnight on a granny charger if you prefer to keep the Type 2 cable for public points.
What length charging cable do I need for my BYD?+−
5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Go for 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger with another vehicle, or your wallbox is some distance from the car's charging port. Longer cables are heavier to coil and store, so choose the shortest length that comfortably reaches.
