BYD Sealion 5
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your Sealion 5+−
The BYD Sealion 5 has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 3.3kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.
Which BYD Sealion 5 versions does it fit?+
This cable fits every BYD Sealion 5, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:
- BYD Sealion 5 Design
- BYD Sealion 5 Comfort
Whichever Sealion 5 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?
Charging
the BYD Sealion 5.
The BYD Sealion 5 is a plug-in hybrid SUV on sale in the UK from 2025 in the first-generation Mk1 form, available in Design and Comfort trims. The Design trim carries an 18.3kWh battery with both AC and DC charging, plus V2L capability as standard. The Comfort trim has a smaller 12.96kWh battery and no DC rapid charging. Both use a Type 2 inlet, so the cable for home wallboxes and public AC charge points is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
The Sealion 5's AC charge rate is 3.3kW on a single phase across both trims, which is below the 7.4kW ceiling of a standard UK home supply. The Design trim adds DC capability at up to 26kW via a CCS port. Rapid DC uses the station's own tethered cable and does not require a cable you carry.
AC charging is 3.3kW on both trims. The Design adds a CCS port for DC at up to 26kW; the Comfort is AC-only. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the Sealion 5 need?
With an AC charge rate of 3.3kW on both trims, the Sealion 5 draws well within the capability of a standard 7.4kW Type 2 cable. There is no need for a three-phase cable on any Sealion 5 variant: the onboard charger is a single-phase unit and the car cannot exceed 3.3kW on AC. A standard 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the correct choice and works on every UK wallbox and public AC charge point.
The slow AC rate means even a three-pin socket at 2.3kW is a practical option for topping up a PHEV battery of this size, though a wallbox is still the better habit for daily use. Keep the cable choice simple: a 7.4kW lead in 5m covers most driveways, with longer lengths available if the wallbox is further from the usual parking spot.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 18.3kWh Design battery from empty costs roughly £1 to £2 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, and around £5 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The Comfort's 12.96kWh battery costs roughly £1 off-peak and around £3 at standard rates. As a PHEV, the Sealion 5 pairs the battery with a combustion engine for longer journeys, keeping daily plug-in costs low. Check current tariffs before budgeting.

BYD Sealion 5 FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the BYD Sealion 5 need?+−
The BYD Sealion 5 has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 3.3kW.
Can the BYD Sealion 5 charge at 22kW?+−
No, the BYD Sealion 5 has a single-phase onboard charger limited to 3.3kW, so a 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. A 22kW cable would only benefit a future car.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
Does the BYD Sealion 5 support V2L?+−
Yes. The BYD Sealion 5 supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), so a V2L discharge cable lets you run tools, appliances and devices straight from the battery through the Type 2 inlet, at up to 3.6kW.
What cable does the BYD Sealion 5 need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Both Sealion 5 trims use a Type 2 AC inlet. The onboard charger draws only 3.3kW, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than sufficient and no three-phase cable is needed. The same cable suits both Design and Comfort trims.
Can the BYD Sealion 5 rapid charge on DC?+−
Only on the Design trim. The 18.3kWh Design version has a CCS DC port rated at up to 26kW. The Comfort trim (12.96kWh) is AC-only with no DC capability. DC rapid charging uses the charger's own tethered cable, not the Type 2 lead you carry for AC charging.
How long does the BYD Sealion 5 take to charge at home?+−
At 3.3kW on a wallbox, the 18.3kWh Design battery takes around 5.5 to 6 hours from empty. The Comfort's 12.96kWh battery takes around 4 hours at the same rate. Both fit within an overnight charge window without difficulty. Even a three-pin socket is workable given the modest battery sizes.
Does the BYD Sealion 5 have V2L?+−
Yes, vehicle-to-load is available on the Design trim as standard. This allows the Sealion 5 to power external devices or appliances from the battery. V2L is separate from the AC charging connection and does not change the Type 2 to Type 2 cable you need for charging.
