Why this fits your eCitan+

The Mercedes-Benz eCitan has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 22kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 22kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Mercedes-Benz eCitan.

The Mercedes-Benz eCitan is a fully electric compact van, on sale in the UK from 2023. Designed for urban deliveries and last-mile work, it shares its platform with the Renault Kangoo E-Tech and offers a 45kWh usable battery for a working range suited to city rounds and local depot-to-depot use. Charging is through a Type 2 inlet for AC, with a CCS port for DC rapid charging at up to around 80kW as an option.

For AC charging at depots, workplace charge points, and home wallboxes, you use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The eCitan comes with an 11kW three-phase onboard AC charger as standard, with a 22kW three-phase option available on some specifications. Understanding which you have, and whether your charge point is three-phase, determines how quickly the van charges on AC.

The eCitan is depot-focused: plan charges around shift patterns and overnight dwell time rather than chasing rapid sessions on the road. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the eCitan need?

At 11kW standard (or 22kW with the optional charger), the eCitan charges faster than most home wallboxes can supply. A standard UK home has a single-phase supply capped at 7.4kW, so on a domestic wallbox the eCitan charges at 7.4kW whatever its onboard charger rating. At a three-phase commercial charge point the van draws its full 11kW, or up to 22kW if that option is fitted. For depot or workplace charging on three-phase, a 22kW-rated cable is the right investment if the charger is three-phase.

For a home or standard single-phase wallbox, a 7.4kW cable is sufficient as that is the ceiling anyway. A 5m length suits a small yard or driveway. At a depot with a longer run from the charge point to the parking bay, 10m gives practical reach without daisy-chaining extensions.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 45kWh battery from empty costs around £3 to £3.50 on an off-peak commercial or EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh. At a standard rate of around 27p per kWh the cost rises to around £12. Most fleet operators arrange overnight charging at depot on a dedicated EV tariff, where the economics are most favourable. Check current rates before committing to a charging strategy.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Mercedes-Benz eCitan need?+

The Mercedes-Benz eCitan has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 22kW.

Can the Mercedes-Benz eCitan charge at 22kW?+

As standard the Mercedes-Benz eCitan has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger; the optional 22kW charger lets it charge at up to 22kW on a three-phase supply. Either way it uses the same 22kW three-phase cable.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Mercedes eCitan need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for AC charging. The standard eCitan has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger; the optional upgrade is 22kW. For home or single-phase wallboxes, a 7.4kW cable at 5m covers all home charging. For depot three-phase charge points, a 22kW cable is worth choosing if the charger supports it.

How long does the eCitan take to charge?+

On an 11kW three-phase charge point the 45kWh battery takes around four to four and a half hours from empty. On a 7.4kW single-phase home wallbox it takes around six hours. With the optional 22kW charger on a three-phase supply, the time drops to around two hours. Overnight charging at a depot makes the most of off-peak rates.

Does the eCitan support DC rapid charging?+

Yes, DC rapid charging via CCS is optional on the eCitan at up to around 80kW. That uses the charger's own tethered cable at the rapid charger, not a cable you supply. The standard AC Type 2 cable covers home and workplace AC charging only.

What length cable is best for the eCitan?+

At a home or small business charge point, 5m is usually enough. For depot bays where the charge point is set further back, 10m gives practical reach and reduces the need to reposition the van. Avoid pulling the cable taut, particularly with the heavier gauge three-phase leads.
