MG S5 EV
Charging cable
Full AC charging speed for your car.
Why this fits your S5 EV+−
The MG S5 EV has a Type 2 inlet and a single-phase 7kW onboard charger. A 7.4kW cable already delivers its full AC speed. The 22kW option only helps if your next car charges faster.

How long does it take?
Charging
the MG S5 EV.
The MG S5 EV is MG's compact electric SUV, on sale in the UK from 2025. Two battery options are available: a 49kWh LFP entry pack and a 64kWh NMC longer-range version. Both use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and a CCS port for DC rapid charging. The cable you provide for home and public AC sessions is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.
MG's UK specification puts AC charging at up to 7kW on a single-phase supply, even though some European market brochures reference 11kW three-phase. DC rapid charging tops out at around 120kW on the 49kWh pack and 150kW on the 64kWh version, using the charger's own tethered cable.
Both battery options share the same 7kW AC speed on a UK single-phase supply. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.
7.4 kW or 22 kW?
Which cable does
the S5 EV need?
Both versions of the MG S5 EV are limited to around 7kW AC on a UK single-phase supply, so a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the practical ceiling and the right cable to buy. There is no reason to choose a 22kW three-phase cable for home charging on this car.
A 5m lead suits the majority of home wallbox installations. If your parking layout means the cable has to stretch from a wall-mounted box to the far end of the car, or your driveway is particularly long, step up to 7m. A 10m cable is an option for more unusual setups, such as a garage with the wallbox at the back.
What does it cost to charge?
Charging the 64kWh NMC battery from empty costs roughly £5 on an off-peak tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or around £17 at a standard rate of around 27p. The smaller 49kWh LFP version is proportionally cheaper, at roughly £4 off-peak. Charging overnight on a dedicated EV tariff is by far the most economical approach. Public rapid costs vary widely, often 45p to 80p per kWh, so use them selectively. Check current tariffs, as rates change.

MG S5 EV FAQs
Good
questions.
Still not sure? Our team will confirm the right cable for your vehicle.
Contact usWhat charging cable does the MG S5 EV need?+−
The MG S5 EV has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on single-phase AC at up to 7kW.
What length charging cable should I get?+−
5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.
Does the MG S5 EV support V2L?+−
Yes. The MG S5 EV supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), so a V2L discharge cable lets you run tools, appliances and devices straight from the battery through the Type 2 inlet, at up to 3.6kW.
What cable does the MG S5 EV need?+−
A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Both the 49kWh and 64kWh versions use a Type 2 inlet for AC charging. MG's UK spec limits AC charging to around 7kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW cable covers the car's full AC speed and there is no advantage to buying a 22kW three-phase option.
Can the MG S5 EV charge at 22kW?+−
No. The UK specification caps AC charging at around 7kW on a single-phase supply. Even on a 22kW public AC charger, the MG S5 EV will only draw up to 7kW. A 22kW cable would not increase charging speed on this car.
How long does the MG S5 EV take to charge at home?+−
On a 7.4kW home wallbox, the 64kWh NMC version takes around 9 hours from empty to full. The 49kWh LFP pack takes around 7 hours. Both easily fit within an overnight charge window. A 3-pin socket at 2.3kW is much slower and best used only as a backup.
What length cable do I need for the MG S5 EV?+−
A 5m cable covers most home driveways comfortably. Choose 7m if your wallbox is mounted some way from where you park the car, or if the charging port tends to end up on the side furthest from the socket. A 10m option handles longer runs or shared parking areas.
