Why this fits your #5+

The Smart #5 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 22kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 22kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Smart #5 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Smart #5, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Smart #5 Pro
  • Smart #5 Pulse
  • Smart #5 Brabus
  • Smart #5 Premium
  • Smart #5 Pro Plus
  • Smart #5 Summit Edition

Whichever #5 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Smart #5.

The Smart #5 is the brand's largest vehicle, a full-size electric SUV on sale in the UK from 2025. It comes in two battery configurations: a base model with a 76kWh LFP pack and the larger Pro, Pulse, Premium, Pro Plus, Brabus, and Summit Edition variants with a 94kWh usable NMC battery on an 800-volt architecture. Both charge through a Type 2 inlet for AC and a CCS port for DC rapid charging. The flagship 94kWh variant supports DC rapid speeds of up to around 400kW on compatible ultra-rapid chargers, while the LFP base model is rated at around 150kW DC.

For home and public AC charging, the cable you supply is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead. The Smart #5's onboard AC charger supports up to 22kW on three phases across all variants, which puts it among the most capable AC chargers you will find in any car.

The 94kWh 800V variants benefit greatly from ultra-rapid DC infrastructure. For home AC charging both battery sizes use the same cable. Rapid (DC) times are for a 10 to 80% charge, the way manufacturers quote them. Real-world charging varies with temperature, battery state and the charger itself.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the #5 need?

The Smart #5's 22kW three-phase onboard charger is the same spec across all variants, but getting that full rate requires three-phase electricity at both ends, which is uncommon in UK homes. On a standard single-phase domestic wallbox, home charging is limited to 7.4kW no matter what cable you use. For day-to-day overnight home charging, a 7.4kW Type 2 cable is perfectly adequate and comfortably fills either battery by morning.

A 22kW cable earns its extra cost if you have a three-phase home supply, or if you regularly charge at 22kW public AC points during work trips or at destinations. At those locations the #5 will pull its full 22kW for a noticeably faster top-up. On any single-phase setup the additional cost of the 22kW cable delivers no practical benefit. The #5's headline charging feature is its ultra-rapid 800V DC capability on the top variants, which uses the station's own tethered cable and does not involve the Type 2 lead you buy at all.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 94kWh battery from empty costs roughly £7 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, or around £25 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. The 76kWh LFP base costs proportionally less, around £5.50 off-peak. Overnight home charging on an EV tariff makes a substantial difference to running costs compared with public rapid charging, which can cost 50p or more per kWh. Always check current tariff rates.

Contact us
Can the Smart #5 charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Smart #5 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 22kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

Does the Smart #5 support V2L?+

Yes. The Smart #5 supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), so a V2L discharge cable lets you run tools, appliances and devices straight from the battery through the Type 2 inlet, at up to 3.6kW.

What charging cable does the Smart #5 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for all home and public AC charging. The #5's onboard charger supports up to 22kW on three phases. A 7.4kW cable delivers the maximum for a standard UK single-phase home. Choose a 22kW cable only if you have three-phase power at home or regularly use 22kW public AC chargers.

Can the Smart #5 really charge at 400kW?+

The 94kWh NMC variants are rated for up to 400kW DC rapid charging on the 800V architecture, using the charger's own tethered cable. This is not something the Type 2 cable you buy affects. The base LFP model is rated at around 150kW DC. On AC the maximum is 22kW on three phases across all variants.

How long does the Smart #5 take to charge at home?+

On a standard 7.4kW single-phase wallbox, the 94kWh battery takes around 13 hours from empty, so overnight charging works well. The 76kWh LFP model takes around 10 hours. On a 22kW three-phase supply, the 94kWh fills in roughly 4 to 4.5 hours and the 76kWh in under 3.5 hours.

Which Smart #5 variants have the larger battery?+

The Pro, Pulse, Premium, Pro Plus, Brabus, and Summit Edition all use the 94kWh NMC battery with the 800V architecture and up to 400kW DC charging. The base Pro trim uses the 76kWh LFP pack with up to 150kW DC. All variants share the same 22kW AC charging spec and use the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable.
