Charge speeds

Across the Smart range.

Every Smart here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.3kW to 22kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Smart.

Smart's electric range spans two very different generations. The older ForTwo Electric Drive and EQ ForTwo, plus the ForFour Electric Drive and EQ ForFour, are compact city cars with modest onboard AC chargers. The newer #1, #3, and #5 are a new generation of larger SUVs and crossovers built on a different platform entirely. All seven models use a Type 2 inlet, so the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable works across every Smart for home and public AC charging.

The difference that matters for cable choice is charging speed. The newer #1, #3, and #5 have 22kW three-phase onboard chargers, while the older ForTwo and ForFour models top out at around 3.3kW to 4.6kW. Pick your model below for exact charging times and its recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Smart need?

Every Smart charges through a Type 2 inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. A 5m length suits most driveways and home wallboxes. Go for 7m or 10m if you park on the street or your wallbox is mounted far from the car. No Smart model needs a Type 1 cable.

The Smart #1, #3, and #5 each have a 22kW three-phase onboard charger. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW no matter what cable you use, so most owners find a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed their home supply can provide. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost on a three-phase supply or at a 22kW public AC charger, where these models pull their full 22kW.

The older Smart ForTwo and ForFour models, including the EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour, charge at between 3.3kW and 4.6kW on AC. A 7.4kW cable is already more than any of them can draw, so there is no reason to pay for a larger one. Their small batteries also charge fully in a few hours from a 3-pin granny charger.

Do all Smart models use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Smart EV, from the older ForTwo and ForFour to the new #1, #3, and #5, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Smart model requires a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Smart #1, #3, or #5 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. All three have a 22kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW. A 22kW cable only adds extra speed on a three-phase supply or at a 22kW public AC point.

Can a Smart charge at 22kW?+

The Smart #1, #3, and #5 each support 22kW AC on three phases. On a standard single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW, so a 22kW cable is only worth the extra cost if you have three-phase access. The older ForTwo and ForFour models top out at around 3.3kW to 4.6kW and gain nothing from a larger cable.

What cable does an older Smart ForTwo or ForFour need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The ForTwo Electric Drive, EQ ForTwo, ForFour Electric Drive, and EQ ForFour all charge at between 3.3kW and 4.6kW on AC, so a standard 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Their small batteries also charge fully from a 3-pin granny charger overnight.

What length cable do I need for my Smart?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox is set well away from the car. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to coil, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
