Why this fits your EQ ForFour+

The Smart EQ ForFour has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Smart EQ ForFour versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Smart EQ ForFour, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Smart EQ ForFour Premium
  • Smart EQ ForFour Exclusive
  • Smart EQ ForFour Prime Premium
  • Smart EQ ForFour Pulse Premium
  • Smart EQ ForFour Prime Exclusive
  • Smart EQ ForFour Passion Advanced

Whichever EQ ForFour trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Smart EQ ForFour.

The Smart EQ ForFour is a four-seat electric city car sold in the UK from 2017 to 2021, based on the Renault Zoe's sibling platform with Daimler involvement. It carries a 17.6kWh gross battery and charges through a Type 2 inlet. Unlike many modern EVs, the Smart EQ ForFour has no CCS rapid charging port, so AC charging covers all of its needs. Standard-equipped cars charge at up to 4.6kW; some variants were optioned with a more capable onboard charger, so check your specific car's specification.

Charging at home or at a public AC point requires a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Given the small battery and modest AC rate, this is a car designed around short urban journeys topped up at home overnight.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the EQ ForFour need?

Most Smart EQ ForFour variants charge at up to 4.6kW from a standard Type 2 connection, which is well within what any Type 2 cable can provide. A standard 7.4kW cable is the correct choice and covers the car's full AC rate with room to spare. There is no point spending more on a 22kW cable unless your specific car was optioned with the higher-rate charger.

Because there is no DC rapid port on the EQ ForFour, the Type 2 cable you use for home charging is also the only way to charge it at public AC stations. A 5m lead is fine for most situations. If you park in a communal area where the charge point is some distance from your bay, a 7m or 10m cable gives useful flexibility without needing to shuffle the car around.

What does it cost to charge?

Filling the 17.6kWh gross battery from empty costs well under £2 on an off-peak EV tariff at around 7.5p per kWh, or around £5 at a standard rate of roughly 27p per kWh. The tiny battery means even a standard household socket can fully charge it in a reasonable time overnight, though a dedicated wallbox is considerably faster. Always check current energy tariff rates.

Smart EQ ForFour FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
Can the Smart EQ ForFour charge at 22kW?+

Only with the optional three-phase onboard charger. The Smart EQ ForFour is single-phase 7.4kW as standard, so a 7.4kW cable delivers its full AC speed. If you specified the optional 11kW three-phase charger, choose the 22kW three-phase cable to use it.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Smart EQ ForFour need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated at 7.4kW. The standard EQ ForFour charges at up to 4.6kW, so any Type 2 cable will comfortably cover it. Some cars were optioned with a higher-rate charger, so check your specific variant's specification. A 22kW cable offers no benefit for the standard car.

Can the Smart EQ ForFour use a rapid charger?+

No. The Smart EQ ForFour has no CCS or CHAdeMO port and cannot use DC rapid chargers. All charging is done through the Type 2 AC inlet. This makes it a car best suited to home charging and short urban journeys rather than long distance motorway trips.

How long does the Smart EQ ForFour take to charge at home?+

At the standard 4.6kW charge rate, the 17.6kWh gross battery fills from empty in around 4 hours on a home wallbox. On a standard 3-pin socket at around 2.3kW it takes around 7 to 8 hours, which still fits within a standard overnight charge period for a car used mainly in the city.

What cable length is best for the Smart EQ ForFour?+

A 5m cable suits most home charging setups and is easy to manage with a compact city car. If you charge in a communal car park or your wallbox is positioned some distance from your usual bay, consider 7m for comfortable reach without the cable running taut.
