Why this fits your EQ ForTwo+

The Smart EQ ForTwo has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Smart EQ ForTwo versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Smart EQ ForTwo, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Smart EQ ForTwo Coupe Premium
  • Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio Premium
  • Smart EQ ForTwo Coupe Nightsky
  • Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio Nightsky
  • Smart EQ ForTwo Coupe Exclusive
  • Smart EQ ForTwo Cabrio Exclusive

Whichever EQ ForTwo trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Smart EQ ForTwo.

The Smart EQ ForTwo is a compact city car built for urban life, sold in coupe and cabrio forms from 2017 to 2024. It is a pure battery-electric vehicle with a 17.6kWh pack and a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you bring for home or public AC charging is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

Charging speed is worth understanding before you buy a cable. The standard onboard charger in the EQ ForTwo is rated at just 4.6kW on a single phase. An optional 22kW three-phase charger was available from Smart, but it is rare in UK-spec cars. Either way, at home a Type 2 cable is all you need: the car decides the speed, not the cable rating.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the EQ ForTwo need?

The EQ ForTwo's standard onboard charger is rated at 4.6kW, which means a 7.4kW cable is already well above what the car can actually draw on a single-phase supply. Whether you plug into a home wallbox or a public 7.4kW AC point, the car will charge at up to 4.6kW regardless of the cable's rating. For the vast majority of owners, a 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right and only cable to buy.

A 22kW rated cable would only be worth considering if your specific car has the rare optional 22kW three-phase onboard charger fitted and you have access to a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC point. Even then, the car cannot exceed 22kW on AC. For most EQ ForTwo owners, a 7.4kW cable at 5m or longer is the practical answer.

A 5m cable suits most home setups. If your wallbox is set well back from where the car sits or the socket ends up on the far side of the car, a 7m lead gives you more flexibility.

What does it cost to charge?

Topping up the 17.6kWh battery from empty costs around £1.30 on an off-peak EV tariff of around 7.5p per kWh, or roughly £4.75 on a standard rate of around 27p. The small battery means a full charge is genuinely cheap, and even a standard overnight session leaves the car ready each morning. Check current tariffs, as rates vary.

Smart EQ ForTwo FAQs

Good
questions.

Contact us
Can the Smart EQ ForTwo charge at 22kW?+

Only with the optional three-phase onboard charger. The Smart EQ ForTwo is single-phase 7.4kW as standard, so a 7.4kW cable delivers its full AC speed. If you specified the optional 11kW three-phase charger, choose the 22kW three-phase cable to use it.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What charging cable does the Smart EQ ForTwo need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home wallboxes and public AC chargers. The standard onboard charger is rated at 4.6kW single-phase, so a 7.4kW cable covers your needs comfortably. The optional 22kW onboard charger is rare in UK cars. A 5m length suits most driveways.

Can the Smart EQ ForTwo use rapid DC charging?+

No. The EQ ForTwo (C453, 2017 to 2024) has no DC rapid charging capability. It charges on AC only, through its Type 2 inlet. For longer journeys you will need to plan around slower AC charging points.

How long does the Smart EQ ForTwo take to charge at home?+

On a 7.4kW home wallbox with the standard 4.6kW onboard charger, a full charge from empty takes around four hours. On a standard 3-pin socket at roughly 2.3kW it takes closer to eight hours. The small 17.6kWh battery means even a slow charge completes overnight with ease.

What length cable do I need for the Smart EQ ForTwo?+

A 5m Type 2 cable suits most urban driveways and car parks. If your wallbox or charging post is further from where the car typically parks, or you park nose-in with the socket on the far end, a 7m cable gives worthwhile extra reach.
