Why this fits your ForFour Electric Drive+

The Smart ForFour Electric Drive has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 11kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 11kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Smart ForFour Electric Drive versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Smart ForFour Electric Drive, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Smart ForFour Electric Drive Prime Premium
  • Smart ForFour Electric Drive Prime Premium Plus

Whichever ForFour Electric Drive trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Smart ForFour Electric Drive.

The Smart ForFour Electric Drive is a five-seat city car produced from 2017 to 2019, before the model was rebadged as the EQ ForFour. It is a pure battery-electric vehicle with a 17.6kWh pack and a Type 2 inlet, meaning the cable you bring to a home wallbox or public AC charger is a standard Type 2 to Type 2 lead.

The ForFour Electric Drive's onboard AC charger runs at 4.6kW on a single phase as standard. Smart offered a three-phase 22kW unit as an option, but take-up in the UK was very low. Like all AC charging, the speed is set by the car's onboard charger, so the cable rating only matters if you plan to use a higher-rated supply that the car can actually match.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the ForFour Electric Drive need?

With a standard 4.6kW onboard charger, the ForFour Electric Drive will never draw more than 4.6kW regardless of the cable you use. A 7.4kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is more than adequate and leaves headroom for any public AC post you encounter. There is no practical reason to spend more on a 22kW rated cable unless your specific car has the uncommon optional 22kW charger fitted.

Even if you do have the optional 22kW onboard charger, it only operates at its full rate on a three-phase supply, which is uncommon in UK homes. On the vast majority of British driveways, a 7.4kW cable charges this car at its 4.6kW maximum. A 5m lead covers most situations, though a 7m version is useful if you park further from the wallbox.

What does it cost to charge?

Charging the 17.6kWh battery from empty costs around £1.30 at an off-peak rate of around 7.5p per kWh, or roughly £4.75 at a standard rate of around 27p. As a small city car this is an inexpensive vehicle to run on electricity. Rates vary, so check your current tariff.

Good
questions.

Contact us
What charging cable does the Smart ForFour Electric Drive need?+

The Smart ForFour Electric Drive has a Type 2 inlet, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for UK home and public charging. It charges on up to three-phase AC at up to 11kW.

Can the Smart ForFour Electric Drive charge at 22kW?+

Only with the optional three-phase onboard charger. The Smart ForFour Electric Drive is single-phase 7.4kW as standard, so a 7.4kW cable delivers its full AC speed. If you specified the optional 11kW three-phase charger, choose the 22kW three-phase cable to use it.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

What cable does the Smart ForFour Electric Drive need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. The standard onboard charger is rated at 4.6kW on a single phase, so a 7.4kW cable is the right choice for most owners. The optional 22kW three-phase unit was rarely fitted in UK cars.

Can the Smart ForFour Electric Drive use rapid charging?+

No. The ForFour Electric Drive (W453 pre-EQ, 2017 to 2019) charges on AC only via its Type 2 inlet. There is no DC rapid charging port on this vehicle. Charging is done at home or at AC public points only.

How long does the Smart ForFour Electric Drive take to charge?+

With the standard 4.6kW onboard charger and a 7.4kW home wallbox, a full charge from empty takes around four hours. On a 3-pin domestic socket at roughly 2.3kW expect closer to eight hours, which still fits comfortably overnight given the small 17.6kWh battery.

What length cable is best for the Smart ForFour Electric Drive?+

A 5m Type 2 cable is sufficient for most home setups. If your wallbox is positioned further from where the car parks, or you regularly use public AC posts with limited reach, choose a 7m lead to avoid any tension on the connector.
