Why this fits your #3+

The Smart #3 has a Type 2 inlet and a three-phase 22kW onboard charger. The 22kW cable carries its full 22kW on three-phase chargers. A 7.4kW cable would cap it. On a single-phase home wallbox both cables charge at the same 7.4kW.

Which Smart #3 versions does it fit?+

This cable fits every Smart #3, because they all share the same Type 2 charging inlet. That includes:

  • Smart #3 Pro
  • Smart #3 Brabus
  • Smart #3 Premium
  • Smart #3 Pro Plus
  • Smart #3 25TH Anniversary Edition

Whichever #3 trim you drive, it is the same cable, so you can order with confidence.

How long does it take?

Charging
the Smart #3.

The Smart #3 is a coupe-SUV from the revived Smart brand, sharing its Geely-developed platform with the Smart #1. On sale in the UK since 2023, it carries the same 66kWh usable battery and the same charging architecture: a Type 2 inlet for AC and a CCS port for rapid DC at up to 150kW. The sloping roofline gives it a more sporting silhouette than its sibling while retaining the same interior space and charging spec.

Plugging in at home or at a public AC station calls for a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Like the #1, the Smart #3's onboard AC charger supports up to 22kW on three phases, which sets it apart from most competitors in this class. DC rapid charging uses the tethered cable at the charger rather than one you purchase separately.

7.4 kW or 22 kW?

Which cable does
the #3 need?

The Smart #3 has a 22kW three-phase onboard charger, but whether that matters to you depends entirely on your electricity supply. Most UK homes have a single-phase connection, which limits the wallbox to 7.4kW regardless of the cable rating. At home, a 7.4kW Type 2 lead delivers everything your supply can provide, and the difference between it and a 22kW cable is zero.

Where the #3's 22kW capability becomes relevant is at three-phase public AC stations, and at the small number of UK homes with three-phase supplies. If either of those applies to you, a 22kW rated cable lets the car charge at its full speed at those locations. Otherwise, save the money and buy the 7.4kW option. The #3 also rapid charges at up to 150kW on DC, which uses the station's own tethered cable.

What does it cost to charge?

A full charge of the 66kWh battery from empty costs around £5 on an off-peak EV tariff at roughly 7.5p per kWh, or approximately £18 at a standard rate of around 27p per kWh. Running the #3 mainly on overnight home charging at an off-peak rate keeps fuel costs well below those of an equivalent petrol car. Public rapid charging costs considerably more per kWh, so reserve it for longer journeys. Tariffs change, so always check current rates.

Contact us
Can the Smart #3 charge at 22kW?+

Yes, the Smart #3 has a three-phase onboard charger, so with a 22kW cable and a three-phase supply it can charge at up to 22kW.

What length charging cable should I get?+

5m suits most home and public charge points. Choose 7.5m or 10m if the charge point is far from your car's charging port or you park on the far side of a bay.

Does the Smart #3 support V2L?+

Yes. The Smart #3 supports vehicle-to-load (V2L), so a V2L discharge cable lets you run tools, appliances and devices straight from the battery through the Type 2 inlet, at up to 3.6kW.

What charging cable does the Smart #3 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. For a standard UK single-phase home wallbox, a 7.4kW cable delivers the full home charging speed. If you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points, a 22kW cable lets the #3 charge at its onboard maximum of 22kW at those locations.

Is the Smart #3 the same spec as the Smart #1?+

In terms of charging, yes. Both use the same 66kWh usable battery, the same Type 2 AC inlet with up to 22kW three-phase capability, and the same CCS port for DC rapid charging at up to 150kW. The #3 has a coupe-SUV body rather than the #1's standard SUV profile.

How long does the Smart #3 take to charge at home?+

On a standard 7.4kW single-phase home wallbox, the 66kWh battery takes around 9 hours from empty, easily done overnight. A three-phase 22kW wallbox cuts that to roughly 3 hours. For longer trips, the 150kW DC rapid capability provides a much faster top-up at motorway services.

What about the Smart #3 Brabus: does it have the same charging setup?+

Yes. The Brabus version adds a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain for more performance, but the battery and charging specs remain the same: 66kWh usable, up to 22kW AC on three phases, up to 150kW DC rapid. It uses the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable as every other #3 trim.
