Charge speeds

Across the Jeep range.

Every Jeep here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. On-board AC charging ranges from about 7.4kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Jeep.

Jeep's electrified UK range includes two fully electric models, the Avenger and the Recon, alongside four plug-in hybrids: the Compass 4xe, the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the Renegade 4xe, and the Wrangler 4xe. The newer Compass Electric completes the BEV line-up. Every Jeep on this list uses a Type 2 inlet, so one cable type covers the whole range.

What varies between models is the onboard AC charger speed, which is what decides whether a larger cable is worth buying. The BEVs carry an 11kW three-phase charger, while the 4xe plug-in hybrids charge at 7.4kW on a single phase. Pick your model below for exact charge times and cable recommendations, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Jeep need?

Every Jeep uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length suits most home driveways and public charge points. Go for 7m or 10m if you park on the street, use a shared charger, or your wallbox sits far from the vehicle. No Jeep needs a Type 1 cable.

The Avenger, Recon, and Compass Electric have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. Most UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so a 7.4kW cable is already giving the full speed your supply can deliver. A 22kW rated cable only earns its extra cost if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where these cars will pull up to 11kW.

The 4xe plug-in hybrids, the Compass 4xe, Renegade 4xe, Wrangler 4xe, and Grand Cherokee 4xe, each charge at 7.4kW on a single phase. A 7.4kW cable is already at or above what these can draw, so there is no reason to buy a larger one. Their smaller batteries also top up well overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you keep the Type 2 cable for public points. In short, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the whole Jeep range.

Do all Jeeps use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Jeep EV and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK, from the Avenger and Recon to the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Jeep needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Jeep Avenger or Recon need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. On a standard single-phase UK home supply they charge at up to 7.4kW, so a 7.4kW cable gives the full speed available at home. A 22kW cable only helps if you have a three-phase supply or use 22kW public AC points regularly.

Can any Jeep charge at 22kW on AC?+

No. The Avenger, Recon, and Compass Electric top out at 11kW on a three-phase supply. The 4xe plug-in hybrids are limited to 7.4kW. On a normal single-phase home a Jeep charges at 7.4kW or less, and a 22kW cable would never deliver more than 11kW even on the fastest models.

What cable do the Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrids need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Compass 4xe, Renegade 4xe, Wrangler 4xe, and Grand Cherokee 4xe all charge at 7.4kW on AC, so a 7.4kW cable is more than enough. Their relatively small batteries also charge fully overnight from a 3-pin granny charger if you prefer to save the Type 2 cable for public points.

What length cable do I need for my Jeep?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox sits a good distance from the car. Longer cables cost more and are heavier to handle, so buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably.
