Charge speeds

Across the Polestar range.

Every Polestar here uses a Type 2 inlet, so one Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits the range. AC charging tops out at 11kW across the range. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Polestar.

Polestar's range covers 5 models: the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1, and the full battery electric Polestar 2, 3, 4 and 5. All of them use a Type 2 inlet, so every Polestar takes the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging.

AC charging speed is consistent across the Polestar line-up: every model has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. That means the three-phase nuance applies to all of them, and the cable choice comes down to whether your home or usual charge point can supply three phases. Pick your model below for its charge times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Polestar need?

Every Polestar uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length works for most driveways and home wallboxes; go for 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a wallbox set back from where you park. No Polestar needs a Type 1 cable.

All five Polestars, including the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1 and the full electric Polestar 2, 3, 4 and 5, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. On a standard single-phase UK home supply, that means charging is capped at 7.4kW regardless of the cable. A 7.4kW cable delivers the fastest charge your home can provide. A 22kW cable only pays off if you have a three-phase supply at home or regularly use 22kW public AC points, where all these cars will pull their full 11kW.

In practice, a single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable suits the whole Polestar range at home. If you regularly use 22kW AC points on the public network, a 22kW rated cable is worth having in the car, but it will not make any difference at a standard single-phase home wallbox.

Do all Polestars use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Yes. Every Polestar, from the plug-in hybrid Polestar 1 to the Polestar 5, uses a Type 2 inlet. They all take the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging, and no Polestar needs a Type 1 cable.

What charging cable does a Polestar 2 or Polestar 3 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, 5m for most driveways. Both have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a standard UK single-phase home supply they charge at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable covers this fully; a 22kW cable only adds benefit at three-phase supplies or 22kW public AC points.

Can a Polestar charge at 22kW?+

No Polestar charges at 22kW on AC. The maximum AC rate for any Polestar is 11kW, and only on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase UK home supply, every Polestar charges at 7.4kW, so a 22kW cable offers no benefit at home.

What cable does the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Polestar 1 has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, the same as the full electric models, so the same cable works. On a single-phase home supply it charges at 7.4kW, and its 34kWh battery can also top up more slowly from a 3-pin granny charger overnight.

What length cable do I need for my Polestar?+

5m is enough for most home wallboxes and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on-street, share a charger, or your wallbox is further from the car's charging port. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably, as longer cables cost more and are heavier to handle.
