Charge speeds

Across the Vauxhall range.

Vauxhall spans both eras: 1 model use Type 1 and the rest use Type 2, so check your car before you buy. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.3kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Vauxhall.

Vauxhall's electric and plug-in range covers a wide spread of vehicles, from the compact Corsa Electric and Mokka Electric to the Astra Electric, Frontera Electric, Grandland Electric, and a large van lineup including the Combo Electric, Vivaro Electric and Movano Electric. The Grandland X PHEV rounds off the plug-in hybrid end of the range. Almost all of these use a Type 2 inlet, so they take a standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable for home and public AC charging. The one exception is the older Ampera, a plug-in hybrid that predates the Type 2 standard and uses a Type 1 inlet instead.

How fast each Vauxhall charges on AC depends on its onboard charger, and that is what determines whether a larger cable is worth buying. Pick your model below to see its exact charge times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Vauxhall need?

Every current Vauxhall EV and PHEV uses a Type 2 inlet, so the cable you need is a Type 2 to Type 2. A 5m length suits most home driveways and public charge points. Step up to 7m or 10m if you park on the street or your wallbox sits some distance from where the charging port sits on the vehicle. The only model that needs something different is the older Ampera, which uses a Type 1 inlet and therefore needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable.

Several newer Vauxhalls, including the Corsa Electric, Astra Electric, Mokka Electric, Grandland Electric and the second-generation Movano Electric, have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger. On a standard single-phase UK home supply, these charge at 7.4kW regardless of the cable rating. A 22kW cable only delivers extra speed on a three-phase supply or a 22kW public AC point, where these cars will draw up to 11kW. For most home owners a 7.4kW cable is the practical maximum.

Older and van-based Vauxhalls such as the Corsa-e, Mokka-e, Combo-e Life, Vivaro Electric and original Movano Electric all top out at 7.4kW on AC. The Grandland X PHEV charges at around 3.7kW. For all of these a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can use, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger one. A single 5m 7.4kW Type 2 cable covers the bulk of the Vauxhall range, with a Type 2 to Type 1 cable needed only for the older Ampera.

Do all Vauxhalls use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Nearly all do. Every current Vauxhall EV and plug-in hybrid uses a Type 2 inlet and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The exception is the older Ampera, which uses a Type 1 inlet and needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead. If you own any other model in the current Vauxhall range, a Type 2 cable is correct.

What charging cable does a Vauxhall Corsa Electric need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The Corsa Electric has an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, but on a typical single-phase UK home supply it charges at 7.4kW. A 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed your home can provide. Only choose a 22kW rated cable if you have a three-phase supply or regularly charge at 22kW public AC points.

Can a Vauxhall Grandland Electric charge at 22kW?+

No Vauxhall charges at 22kW on AC. The Grandland Electric has an 11kW three-phase charger, so the maximum AC speed it can ever reach is 11kW, and only on a three-phase supply. On a standard single-phase UK home it charges at 7.4kW. A 22kW cable will never deliver more than 11kW to this car.

What cable does the older Vauxhall Ampera need?+

The Ampera uses a Type 1 inlet, not Type 2, so it needs a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. It charges at around 3.3kW on AC, meaning its small battery can also top up from a granny charger overnight. No other current Vauxhall uses Type 1, so check your model before buying.

What length charging cable do I need for my Vauxhall?+

5m covers most home driveways and public charge points comfortably. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a communal charger, or your wallbox is far from the car. Longer cables are heavier to coil and cost more, so pick the shortest length that reaches without pulling tight.
