Charge speeds

Across the Citroen range.

Citroen spans both eras: 2 models use Type 1 and the rest use Type 2, so check your car before you buy. On-board AC charging ranges from about 3.5kW to 11kW depending on the model. A cable never charges faster than your car's on-board charger or your home supply allows, so on a standard single-phase UK home a 7.4 kW cable gives the full speed available.

Speeds are on-board AC limits. Rapid DC uses the station's own cable.

Charging guide

Charging
your Citroen.

Citroen's electric and plug-in range covers everything from the compact Ami and e-C3 through to the e-C4, e-C4 X, e-Berlingo, e-Dispatch, e-Spacetourer, e-Relay and C5 Aircross Electric, as well as the C5 Aircross PHEV. Most of these use a Type 2 inlet and take a standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable. However, two older models, the Berlingo Electric and the C-Zero, use a Type 1 inlet and need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead.

What changes between models is how fast each one charges on AC, which is what decides whether a 7.4kW cable or a larger one is worth buying. Pick your model below for its exact charging times and recommended cable, or read the brand-wide guidance underneath.

What charging cable does a Citroen need?

Most Citroen EVs and plug-in hybrids charge through a Type 2 inlet, so the lead you need is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A 5m length suits most driveways; go for 7m or 10m for on-street parking or a wallbox that sits well away from the car. The exception is the Berlingo Electric and the C-Zero, which have a Type 1 inlet. For these two models you need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable, with the Type 1 connector going into the car.

A small number of Citroen models have an 11kW three-phase onboard charger, including the C5 Aircross Electric and the second-generation e-Relay. Almost all UK homes are single-phase, which caps home charging at 7.4kW regardless of the cable, so for most owners a 7.4kW cable delivers the full speed available at home. A 22kW rated cable only earns its cost if you have a three-phase supply or regularly use 22kW public AC points.

The majority of Citroen's range, including the e-C3, e-C4, e-Berlingo, e-Dispatch and e-Spacetourer, charges at 7.4kW on AC. The C5 Aircross PHEV charges at 3.7kW. For all of these, a 7.4kW cable is already more than the car can draw, so there is no reason to pay for a bigger one. For the Ami, which charges at just 3.7kW, any Type 2 cable will do the job.

Do all Citroen EVs use a Type 2 charging cable?+

Most do, but not all. The Berlingo Electric and the C-Zero both have a Type 1 inlet and need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable. All other Citroen electric and plug-in hybrid models use a Type 2 inlet and take a standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable.

What charging cable does a Citroen e-C3 or e-C4 need?+

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Both the e-C3 and e-C4 charge at 7.4kW on AC via a single-phase onboard charger, so a 7.4kW cable gives you the full speed available. There is no benefit to buying a 22kW cable for these models.

What cable does the Citroen C-Zero need?+

The C-Zero has a Type 1 inlet, so you need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable, with the Type 1 plug going into the car. It charges at 3.7kW on AC, so any cable rated at 7.4kW or above is more than adequate for its speed.

Can a Citroen charge at 22kW AC?+

Only the C5 Aircross Electric and the second-generation e-Relay have 11kW three-phase onboard chargers, and no Citroen reaches 22kW on AC. On a standard single-phase UK home, all models charge at 7.4kW or below, so a 22kW cable adds no benefit on a home supply.

What length cable do I need for my Citroen?+

5m suits most home wallboxes and public charge points. Choose 7m or 10m if you park on the street, share a charger, or your wallbox is positioned far from the car's charging port. Buy the shortest length that reaches comfortably, as longer cables are heavier to coil and cost more.
